Users Coming Off Slimming Injections Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis reveals that people who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle regimens.

Findings released in a major medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users using such drugs need to be aware of the danger of fast weight regain when the treatment concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain implies a reversion to starting weight within about one and a half years.

Comparing Approaches

The study, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Scientists point out that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically see a slower creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Understanding the Quick Regain

Doctors propose the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened regain.

The injections imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."

A Chronic Issue?

The NHS recommend the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians argue that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.

This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "underscore the long-term nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Accounts

People who have stopped the jabs explain a intense resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced a trigger flipping and you're instantly starving," recalled an individual.

This challenge is compounded if patients have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Recent estimates show that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is more common among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss relies on integrated lifestyle management.
