One can find numerous candidates for the designation as “planet’s most significant invention.” The wheel. The printing press. The steam engine.
As per a recent publication, though, that title should go to a mechanised timber mill conceived through Dutchman Corneliszoon van Uitgeest in 1593.
“Prior to mechanised sawing, building a simple trading ship necessitated around ten lumberjacks working for 90 days,” notes Jaime Dávila. “Using wind-powered lumber mills, the same amount of processed timber might be produced within seven days.”
Thanks to their speedy automated cutter, which turned logs into planks with almost no manual labor, Dutch builders were able to build ships more quickly than any other nation, which sparked one hundred years of Netherlands naval, financial and artistic supremacy across the continent and the world.
