A French judicial body has convicted ten people for engaging in the digital intimidation of Brigitte Macron, the wife of the President of France, Emmanuel Macron.
The those on trial faced allegations of circulating fabrications regarding her gender identity and sexuality, in addition to making hurtful comments about the couple's 24-year age gap.
The court delivered suspended jail terms of a maximum of eight months to the defendants. The full ruling has yet to be released.
A longstanding unfounded claim suggesting that Brigitte Macron is a trans woman has spread widely since her husband's first electoral victory in 2017.
This recent ruling in France is concurrent with the Macrons initiating a defamation lawsuit in the US against conservative commentator Candace Owens, who has likewise promoted similar conspiracy theories about the French president's wife's gender.
Their lawsuit alleges that Owens ignored any factual proof that refuted her assertions opting to give a platform to established defamers.
Owens has frequently reiterated these assertions on her show and social networks, and in March 2024 proclaimed that she would risk all her credibility on her conviction that Mrs. Macron was born a man.
Brigitte Macron first met her now-husband when she was a teacher at his secondary school.
The couple married in 2007, when the man who would become president was 29 and she was 54.
